Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary to visit riot-hit Mau to assess situation
Lucknow | October 23, 2005 12:08:46 PM IST

Uttar Pradesh state Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha will be visiting the riot hit town of Mau in the state to take stock of the situation and is expected to relax the curfew for general public today.

Uttar Pradesh Governor T. V. Rajeswar, on Saturday, had also visited riot-hit areas in Mau, including Sadar Chowk and Sanskrit Pathshala that incurred the most damage, amid tight security arrangements and met the affected people.

The Governor had also met delegations of the Congress party, led by its National Women wing president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and a BJP delegation, which was led by D M Singh, at the Circuit House.

Later in the day, Rajeswar, who is understood to have annoyed over the laxity of the district administration on the Mau communal riots, had summoned State Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav at the Raj Bhawan to apprise him of his views on the incident.

Expressing concern over the alleged involvement of independent Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukhtar Ansari in the riot, Rajeswar said it was unfortunate that even after 55 years of independence such communal riots were taking place.

"Both the communities should celebrate their festivals together with harmony," he said, adding that peace committees should be formed with representation from all communities to instill confidence among the masses and prevent recurrence of such incident in future.

The situation in Mau, according to authorities, remained peaceful today and no incident has been reported for the last five days.

The indefinite curfew, which was clamped on October 14, is expected to relaxed officially today after Sinha's visit. However, women and children were being allowed to go out of their houses during stipulated time to purchase essential commodities.

Meanwhile, the probe into the matter, which will be carried out by Revenue Board chairperson Neera Yadav-led three-member team, has been delayed due to Yadav's leave, and is expected to commence after Diwali.

The district authorities were reported to be considering to slap National Security Act (NSA) on eight persons against whom FIR had been lodged for instigating violence during riots.

Independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari and BJP MLC Ramji Singh are some of the main accused against who FIR had been registered for instigating communal violence. (ANI)
